Largely self-taught, with taste he calls eclectic, Robert Thornley considers his work a living collaboration with the stone. Beginning with a hint of shape, the design evolves and unfolds in the sculptor's mind's eye.
In the twenty-five years he has been a sculptor, Thornley has explored his genre in wood, alabaster, limestone, marble, copper, steel and bronze.
Thornley's sculpting career began in 1978. He had earlier made the move from sign-maker to relief-carver when the First National Bank commissioned him to install pictorial relief: carvings in wood, for the Casper, WY. Airport. Relief was far more challenging than the singular perspective of graphic carving and it inspired Thornley to explore the dimensional aspects of sculpture.
