Photography started as a hobby back in high school I guess, woodworking as soon as I was tall enough to see what Dad was cutting on the saw. Made all kinds of things growing up, but just recently started making my own frames. The frames that are on the market today just wouldn’t cut it for my purposes.
I’m partial to Redwood, Douglas fir, Alder and on occasion, a really warped piece of barnwood that looks hopeless. I start by sifting through piles of wood, only to take home a few select pieces that meet my criteria for color, grain, and how well I think they will take a stain. No two are alike.
Then I match photos with pieces of wood and start cutting. Staining is next, then matting. I cut all the matting myself, choosing colors that compliment both photo and frame.
I currently shoot with a thirty year old Canon camera. I’m starting to look into digital, but still am skeptical. I use no filters, no photoshop, and no computer. A truly great photo needs none of it. A little talent, a good eye, some great lighting, definitely some timing and don’t forget luck!!!
